All of the products developed by SNF Canada share two essential characteristics: the capacity to treat pollution and help sustain the environment, and their use in every day life in products that have become indispensable to a person’s well being.

The core strength of SNF Canada is the development of products for the end user that are optimized for specific applications. SNF Canada is actively involved in product development, from fundamental research through to application. Our leading global position in polymer production has enabled us to enter many different markets throughout our 31 year history.

Water Treatment

The growth of urban development, coupled with the industrialization and development of irrigation are increasing the demand for water.

SNF has developed polymers which suit all types of treatment, from production of drinking water to sludge dewatering. Thanks to SNF Canada’s local distributors and technical teams, customers are assured an optimal selection of suitable reagents and technical follow-up.

SNF’s flocculants and coagulants cover global market needs for:

  • Wastewater Treatment
  • The Production of Drinking Water
  • The Production of Dewatered Sludge

In the case of water treatment, two types of polymer may be considered:

  1. Organic coagulants (e.g. polyamines, polyDADMAC, etc.) are used for treating water with low suspended solids content and they replace (completely or in part) inorganic coagulants (e.g. aluminum sulphate, polyaluminum chloride and ferric chloride).
  2. Organic flocculants, especially polyacrylamides and polyethylene oxides, are used for settling.

Two types of treatments are used:

  1. Biological treatment, which generally comprises four main steps:

    1. preliminary treatment for removing the coarsest solid particles by screen cleaning;
    2. primary treatment for removing suspended solids by settling or flotation;
    3. aeration in order to form biological flocs;
    4. secondary treatment for settling the biological flocs;
  2. Physico-chemical treatment in which the water is treated directly by a coagulant and a flocculant. The sludge is then dewatered by filtration or centrifugation using a flocculant. This method is often used as an intermediate step.

SNF Canada’s flocculants can be used at various steps in these processes: primary or secondary settling tanks or thickeners, but their most common use is for sludge dewatering by filtration or centrifuging.

Oil Industry

SNF’s products have a wide range of applications in the oil industry including:

  • Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) – SNF is the world leader in polymer assisted enhanced oil projects. We have products for all oil gravities and reservoir types. With EOR, an aqueous solution, whose viscosity is modified by moderate anionic polymers, is injected in order to displace the oil in situ. The molecular weight of the polymer is determined depending on the permeability of the reservoir and on the viscosity of the oil in situ.

  • Drilling – Clear water drilling additives, flocculants (cationic, anionic and non-ionic), bentonite extenders, viscosifiers, thickeners and thinners, prevention of water intrusion, clay stabilization, and the treatment of drilling mud and shale after drilling for safe disposal for low and high temperature environments.
    Polymers have several functions including: viscosity modifier; filtrate reducer; bentonite extender; swelling inhibitor for water-sensitive clays, etc. Depending on their functions, polymers are chosen from a range of products going from low to medium molecular weights and from moderate to very high anionicities.
  • Drag reduction – in which a moderately anionic polymer of high molecular weight is used, because of its cohesion properties, to reduce the frictions and turbulences when injecting water with a high flow rate.
  • Water shut-off – in which the inflow of water into a well is blocked by injecting a polymer solution which is then gelled by in-situ cross linking. The water permeability of the reservoir is modified, without affecting the oil permeability, by absorption of the polymer on the rock.
  • Production, Upgrading and Refining – oil / water separation enhancement, scale prevention, oily water cleanup, and water disposal (reduced injection pressures).
  • Well Workover and Stimulation – which include gelants, thickeners, oil viscosifiers, and scale inhibitors, all for low and high temperature environments.
  • Water Preparation for Steam Injection – as it applies to produced water de-oiling, scale inhibitors, filter aids, flocculants for hot / cold lime softeners, flocculants for belt presses and centrifuges, and scale inhibitors used in boiler water and cooling water applications.
  • Slick Water Fracking – A variety of slick water fracking polymers are available for all water types from freshwater, to brines surpassing 400,000 ppm TDS. Brines with a variety of mono to di-valent ratios can be handled utilizing anionic, cationic and amphoteric polymer chemistries;
  • Oil Sands Tailings Treatment SNF provides polyacrylamide chemistry to a variety of dewatering applications, from proprietary treatment methods, to thickening, centrifugation, filtration and dry stacking;

  • Dust Control – for wet and dry roadway environments and stockpile dust control which is accomplished using our vegetable based, environmentally friendly, all natural dust control product range.

Constrution Industry

SNF Canada offers FLOSET Superplasticizers, which are a new generation of dispersants based on polycarboxylate polymer technology, producing high slump concrete at low dosage with no strength loss. For use in the manufacture of both precast and ready mix concrete. SNF Canada also has flocculant and coagulant in tablet form, to allow for easy dirty water emission control on building sites.

Cosmetics

SNF’s range of polymers are extensively used in cosmetics and personal care products. SNF’s specialization in polymer analysis techniques ensure safe application for their intended purpose and consistent quality.

The polymers specifically designed by SNF for the cosmetic industry benefit from constant research into the production of high-purity monomers and advanced polymerization techniques. They contain conditioning, film-forming, and thickening performance characteristics.

Textile Industry

SNF is specialized in the manufacture of auxiliaries for the textile industry. Laboratory tests simulating the production environment enable SNF to supply products designed to meet the textile industry requirements. SNF’s Floprint range includes high-performance products for textile finishing processes.

Mining Industry

SNF products are widely used in the mining and refining of a multitude of ores, including: diamonds, coal, molybdenum, phosphates, copper, lead, zinc, gold, nickel, platinum group elements and others. Our industry leading technical representative experience level allows us to quickly hone in on what the process restrictions and issues are, bringing about problem resolution faster than anyone else.

Our primary activity common in all mines is in the recycling and clarification of process water. Water is the lifeblood of a mining circuit, and SNF’s polyacrylamide products are vital to the process. Polyacrylamides are used to densify process sludge, both process and waste, making the solids available for further processing, and clean water available for reuse.

The mining industry consumes a great deal of water during two processes:

  1. Ore washing and flotation: there are several minerals for which these processes can be used, namely: iron, coal, phosphates, diamonds, sand, zinc, uranium. SNF Flocculants are used for:

    • Separating the water from the gangue in order to recycle it
    • Dewatering the sludge obtained (centrifuging, filtration, thickening)
    • Separating clear water from water containing suspended particles (settling, filtration, centrifuging)
  2. Obtaining Metal: In this case, these ore is dissolved in an acid, alkaline or specific solution in which the impurities are precipitated using a flocculant. The metal is then recovered in the form of a hydroxide salt, often by flocculation. The mining industries also uses SNF Canada polymers for the following applications in particular:

    • Pelletization: This process is used for agglomerating fine wet particles in the form of granules using anionic polymers.
    • Dispersion: Polymers are used for keeping clays, calcium carbonate or titanium oxide in suspension or for grinding.

SNF Canada has the ability to develop site-specific blends and new products across the entire spectrum to improve process recoveries and purities, leading to more profitable operations. We do this, utilizing our metallurgical labs in Houston and in Chile, along with our coal lab in Pennsylvania.

SNF Canada can handle your roadway (wet and dry environments) and stockpile dust control requirements with our vegetable based, environmentally friendly, all natural dust control product range.

SNF Canada also supplies many of the drilling mud products used in the mining drilling industry, as well as stemming agents used in blasting, primarily through our vast reseller network on a global basis.

Mining Reagents

SNF Canada has a full range of mining reagents, in conjunction with our sister company SNF Flomin. We currently supply grinding aids (rheology modifiers), scale inhibitors, flotation reagents, depressants, collectors, selective products, etc, for the collecting, processing and concentrating of mineral streams in Canada and throughout the world. SNF is a world leader in tailings dewatering in conventional and oil sands mining.

SNF products are widely used for the flotation of copper, lead, zinc, gold, nickel, platinum group elements and others. Although our base products consist of the traditional known chemistries, we also have active programs in place for developing site specific blends and new products across the froth flotation spectrum.

Paper Industry

SNF laboratories are constantly developing new products to service the specific needs and challenges of the paper-making industry. It’s range of applications apply to recycled paper as well as bleached and unbleached virgin fibres used for packaging, fine paper and tissue.

SNF produces a comprehensive range of water soluble polymers specifically designed to solve the problems of paper & board processes occurring in the wet end stages of the paper making process, which include:

  • Wastewater treatment
  • Drainage and Retention
  • Clarification and Recycling of process water
  • Catatonic promotion for alkaline size
  • Neutralization of colloids and coated broke, anionic trash catcher

SNF’s products increase runnability, while helping reduce environmental impact through the reduction of water use. SNF Canada also offers its strategic partners a full range of synthetic agents to impart dry strength properties as well as temporary wet strength.

Dredging

SNF Canada specializes in the effective capture of fines and silts

Thickening of dredged sediments to obtain a clear overflow.
The Polymer can be injected directly in hopper dredgers, or used in settlement ponds. instead of using two or three successive settlement ponds, the addition of polymers decreases the settlement time. The overflow is clear after the first pond, saving land area and civil engineering work.

Dewatering of thickened sludge with either geo-textile tubes, centrifuges, belt filter presses or screw presses. Polymers have proved to be very efficient in the dewatering of sludge from municipal and industrial lagoons, ponds, lake clean-out projects, waterways, harbours and ship canals.

Port Construction SNF Canada’s proposal is a change from the traditional lagooning process. After many years of natural drying, the soil is heterogeneous. Polymers, on the other hand, give homogenous flocs made of sand and slime, which after only 6 months of drying leave a valuable land. Our process means that less land area is consumed by settling areas and land is usable after 6 months. It is a cost-effective way to sort out the problems, as there is no capital investment and our process is less expensive to operate than conventional disposal on a total cost basis. Furthermore, in the case of contaminated sediment, the polymer is able to enhance the attachment of the contaminants to the large flocculated sediment particles, thus leaving a cleaner sediment behind.
